Unsparing Kerala Flooding Claims the Lives of Hundreds and Leaves Closer to a Million People in Shelters. An Estimated Rupees 30,000 Crores ($4 Billion) in Damages to the State of Kerala.

It is now international news that Kerala was hit by the worst flood the state has faced in over a century. We see death tolls rising above 400, with hundreds of people still unaccounted for. Closer to 1 million individuals are living in shelters and relief camps, and 300,000 people have been rendered homeless.

What help have we seen so far? 1,500 army personnel have assisted in rescue operations for those stranded in their homes. People are returning to what is left of their homes to find no electricity, unhygienic conditions, infrastructure hazards, no drinking water, and harmful insects, snakes, and diseases. In addition to homes, roads, dams, bridges, land, stores, hospitals and countless other structures have been damaged. The Central Government has promised to give Kerala 500 crores in aid, but is that anything relative to the needed 30,000 crores?

The families have lost relatives, their belongings, their homes, and are now in need of bare essentials: clothing, food, water, and medicine.

The Indian Government has yet to declare a State of Emergency in Kerala, this does not mean that Kerala is not in a state of distress. The people of Kerala need our help now more than ever. We see numerous efforts being made to raise funds to help Kerala. But we see no end in sight. Funds are being raised and sent to Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund, but what next? Funds are increasing but so is the need for supplies. What we need is an initiative to help bring immediate supplies to those that need it now.

I, with the help of a few others, am privileged to head a charitable organization whose mission is to serve the society. We have decided to use our abilities to help this cause. As those who have plenty, some, or little, we are in a position to give to those who have none. It is difficult to be prepared for a natural disaster, and it is important to be aware that this could happen to anyone, anywhere.

In Kerala itself we see people opening their homes to each other and cooking meals to share with what little they have left. We are declaring solidarity with Kerala, and as the privileged in this situation, we are given a purpose, to help those who were not as unfortunate as us. Let us donate before infections and diseases spread, before people starve, and before the death toll rises.
